I need some tips on living with someone with sleep apnea. My father was diagnosed while he was in prison with sleep apnea and was on a cpap machine. When he was released he was not on a cpap machine and has snored horribly, keeping me up all night. I’ve tried to talk him into doing a sleep study so he can get a cpap machine but he has told me numerous times that he wants to wait until he loses weight and gets his diabetes under control. His diabetes is under control, but he is still convinced that he will stop snoring once he loses weight. He doesn’t realize that he snored just as bad as he is now when he was a healthy weight.

My room is right next to his, the walls are paper thin, I am losing so much sleep I don’t know what to do anymore. Can anyone with this kind of experience give me some tips on how to get used to it?

I have tried a lot of things from reduced salt, to no salt to walking and working out and my blood pressure is still high – 140/xx (don’t remember the bottom number). I don’t want to take medication for it just yet. I want to get it down naturally.

I also found out I have sleep apnea, but still waiting for a sleep study for confirmation. So, just how significant could Sleep Apnea be in regards to High Blood Pressure?

I have a sleep study coming up next Sunday and Monday. The doctor thinks I have narcolepsy. I have been having trouble driving and had to take a leave of absence from work, because I was falling asleep while driving. Right now, I just drive for small trips to the local grocery store. My husband does all the other driving. I am just wondering if they are going to take away my driver’s license, or will the medicine make it possible for me to drive long distances (20 minutes to 1 hour), so I can go back to work.

I have sleep apnea (diagnosed in a sleep study). When I go to bed, I can fall asleep very quickly, but then I wake up. And after I wake up, then I can’t fall asleep again for a long time.

Does anyone else have this same problem? I can fall asleep very easily initially. But after I wake up again, then I have so much trouble sleeping.

First of all, I do get enough sleep at night.

I’m having a sleep study done in a few weeks. One of the things they want to rule out is narcolepsy. Excessive daytime sleepiness is definitely a problem for me, but if I nap I don’t wake for a long time… like 4 hours. If I drift off in the evening, chances are I’ll be asleep until morning. If I tell someone to wake me up, I won’t wake up when they try. I vaguely remember talking to them, but no matter how much I wanted to make sure I didn’t spend that long sleeping, I would. I’ve also always had a really, really hard time waking up in the morning. This has been a big problem for me in terms of getting to work, school, appointments, and getting my son off to school on time.

Anyways, my question is just a general one about narcolepsy… I’ve read that people with narcolepsy generally feel better after a nap. How long are these naps, and are they unable to stay awake if someone tries to get them up during a nap?
I don’t have any of the symptoms of sleep apnea, nor has anyone ever told me that I gasp for breath in my sleep. I only rarely fall asleep involuntarily, but I take an ADD medication that is also used to treat narcolepsy, and my sleep doctor thinks it could be masking the problem by unintentionally treating it.

My question though isn’t about falling asleep, it’s about waking up.

What is your personal experience with sleep apnea?

At my doc’s request, I did a sleep study last week.

Doc called me today, said I have "severe sleep apnea."

I said, can’t I just lose weight? (I could lose 60 pounds before I get near "normal" sized.) He said it is "not enough" right now.

Got an appt to see him next week.

Anyone had any personal experience with this? Any advice comments or suggestions?
