A machine that alarms when a person stops breathing is an apnea monitor, or a pulse oximeter , another monitor, not a CPAP unit or BiPap which would be a therapy for her to treat obstructive apnea, not just a monitor , Yes the emphysema combined with sleep apnea can be very complicated, but it would be best to consult a pulmonologist, a lung specialist right away. Also, contact your local hospital for better breather support groups which is a self help community of many folks with the same problems. You will find many ideas and resources and practical solutions as well as hope and ideas for coping with your worries. Keep learning .

The emphysema is a serious condition by itself, but it should not greatly effect the sleep apnea, or visa versa. Sleep apnea is when a person stops breathing while asleep because there is a anatomical blockage or a central nervous system breakdown. Your mam probably has the blockage kind, when she snores, her wind pipe becomes blocked and she cant get a breath in. The machine that she got will blow air down her wind pipe constantly so that it cannot become blocked, so she shouldn't have any periods of no breaths at all while on the machine. As long as she uses the machine in the way that is prescribed, she will be fine. Also, she needs to adhere closely to the medications prescribed for her emphysema, she was probably given Advair, Flovent, Spiriva, Azmacort and possibly albuterol and atrovent, she needs to take them everyday in order to control her disease. Good Luck!! Have faith, she will be fine!!!
