Apnea, over time, can strain the heart. If a person had open heart surgery and does have apnea, it is best to use the CPAP. I dont know the cause of the heart surgery. Was it because of blockages, a repair of a valve, etc..

But over time, apnea can cause heart issues. And yes, you can die.

A lot of this depends on how bad his sleep apnea is. If he is having multiple, long episodes of apnea every night then yes, this is putting a strain on his heart. If he is only having a few, short periods every night, then his risk is not as great. He needs a sleep study in order to determine how bad his sleep apnea is and then his doctor can determine his risk factors. If he wakes up tired in the morning, falls asleep easily as soon as he gets home a night, then his quality of sleep during the night is poor, leaving him fatigued daily which is also a stressor on his heart. People who nap as soon as they sit down in a recliner can improve the quality of their life by the use of a C-PAP machine - they will feel more rested every morning and have more energy. Sleep apnea stresses mostly the heart, not other organs. If the sleep apnea is severe and not treated, then yes, this could stress a weak heart to the point where a heart attack occurs and a person could die. Your doctor needs to make the determination as to whether he thinks this might be a stress on his heart.

My husband has been diagnosed with this and does not use any type of machine. He also had open heart surgery several years ago. He seems fine according to him and doctors.

Yes.
You are depriving your body of oxygen, in turn making all other organs, including the hear work harder to recieve oxygen, leaving yourself at risk for organ failure and heart attack.
