sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a common, although often undiagnosed, sleep disorder which affects people of all ages, including children, though it is more commonly seen in men who are over 40. It is also most commonly seen in people who are overweight.

In cases of sleep apnea breathing ceases during the night, frequently literally hundreds of times and for as much as sixty seconds or longer. The disorder derives its name from the Greek word "apnea" meaning "without breath".

Once breathing stops, oxygen levels in the blood fall and carbon dioxide levels climb. This causes the heart to pump harder and in some instances to beat irregularly, or even to stop beating for a few seconds. Your diaphragm and chest muscles work harder and your blood pressure rises. Finally, your brain senses that your body is in trouble and wakes you enough for you to breathe and, as you do so, your breathing will often be accompanied by loud snoring.

It should be noted that snoring itself is also very common and it is thought that about forty percent of all adults snore. Snoring is also more commonly seen in men, rather than in women. Although snoring is almost always observed in cases of sleep apnea, snoring by itself doesn't mean that you are suffering from sleep apnea.
