I’ve got a friend who has severe kidney disease and is on dialysis. She has restless leg syndrome at night extremely bad, and she dosent know what to do– she cant have much iron, magnesium or potassium because of her conditions, and i think medication is out of the question because it may react with something else she takes. Other than exercise what can she do

Outside of the medication it is news to me there is anything you can do.
I also have restless leg syndrome but thank goodness no other underlying medical issues. I take meds for mine but also soak in a hot tub every night with epsom salt. It helps relieve the sore muscles and seems to calm my legs down. It is a horrible condition and I feel for your friend. I hope this helps a bit.
I have RLS myself, but I do not take medication yet, as I am on other medications, so I am hesitant to try anything for fear or reactions, which I tend to get easily.
What I have found for myself was really a surprizingly easy solution. Basically, the restless leg is muscle spasms, with tightening, tension, etc. So, one particularly restless night I decided to try Icy Hot. Much to my surprize it helped!
I just rubbed it on like lotion on my legs, but mainly on the areas that were being particularly bothersome (above my knees, calves, ankles). I wondered why I had not thought of it earlier!
This has been my solution on many nights (and days). For me, it seems to help and is an answer at least temporarily, without perscription medication.
Also, look into herbal teas, (ginsing), and I listed a website below with several home remedies, one being apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle, saturate legs and rub in. I think I will have to try that! (assuming I can tolerate the smell, whew! LOL)
Well, I hope that I can be of help, you can also just try to google “natural remedies, restless leg” and see what you come up with, there are a lot of options out there. Best of luck to you!
RLS is very common with kidney disease (something like 30 or 40% of people with renal issues have RLS). I can’t imagine that her nephrologist doesn’t know about RLS and can’t help her. I don’t have any direct knowledge of what to do, but I’ve seen many research articles about it (didn’t read them, so don’t know what they say). I did a Google search and quickly came up with many research articles (I searched on the words “RLS renal disease”).
There are no natural things that work for everyone. The RLS Foundation has a message board and there is a non-pharm section that lists many things that people have tried. You could try reading through that, too.
It’s really nice of you to try and help. Those without RLS don’t really get how much it wears on you, day after day. She’s lucky to have you as a friend.
