Has anyone who has been diagnosed with restless leg syndrome also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia?

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia ten years ago but now I am questioning the diagnosis. Two months ago after two sleep studies, the doctor told me I had RLS and put me on requip. The medication is helping with the restless leg syndrome and the FMS is also much better. Could the two be related or was I misdiagnosed?

The symptoms of the two are alike. So, thats hard to say – you could have been misdiagnosed – or actually have both. I’d have to know what other symptoms you suffer from inorder to answer you better.

The Restless Leg Syndrome is a fairly new medical discovery.
Since your diagnosis was 10 years ago, and the RLS meds are helping you, I would suggest that you have been misdiagnosed..10 yrs ago..the docs did not know what RLS was.
I would still ask the doc that diagnosed you with RLS if that is the new diagnosis for your symptoms. Tell him that you were diagnosed with fibromyalgia,and maby you will be supprised to find that is what alot of other people have been diagosed with until this new RLS breakthrough..
FMS affects every system of the body. It is, also, possible to have other conditions along with your FMS.
You do not say how the doctor who said you have FMS determined your diagnosis. Unfortunately, even today there are still physicians that treat FMS as a “waste basket” diagnosis when they can’t find any other reason for a problem.
To diagnose FMS correctly the physician must take a thorough medical history and rule out any other possible causes for the symptoms, but he is not to stop there. He needs to know how to properly perform the tender points test. There are 18 very specific points on the body that when a very specific amount of pressure is applied will cause pain in those with FMS, but not in those that don’t have FMS. 11 or more of positive points means FMS. If the doctor that said you had FMS did not perform this test on you, then you should ask to have the FMS diagnosis re examined. Most Rheumatologists are trained on how to properly diagnose FMS.
