Moving the affected body part modulates the sensations, providing temporary relief
Walk before you go to bed
Put feet in cool water
Try a heating pad
Take two aspirins before bedtime
Don’t eat a big meal late
Lower your stress level
Rub your legs with an electric ********. Some people say this reduces symptoms; in a few people, however, it could make symptoms worse.
Massage legs before bed
Don’t use alcohol as a sedative
Stop or dramatically reduce caffeine
Quit smoking
I have heard that codeine can help, but that is not something it is safe to take regularly. My husband suffered with it really badly when he had a job where he was on his feet all day. Now that he has changed jobs, it’s not nearly so bad.
there are 2 perscription drugs for RLS.I’ve been on requip for seceral years,I have acute RLS.It works great,I can’t remember the other, but basicly it’s the same as the first.
Usually, a couple of Excedrin do it for me, but mine only happens once in a while. They do have a prescription available for those that suffer with it at least three or more times a week. Fortunately, it hasn’t gotten that bad yet.
I saw a news piece that says that RLS may be hereditary. I mentioned that to my mom and learned that she had it when she was younger, but that it went away. I have been suffering with it for years and never knew she had it.
I have tried taking mild pain medication and sleeping pills, but this seems to exacerbate the problem. I found that on days that I am most active and have a regular exercise routine, especially using my legs, then I don’t have the problem. I also do some calf stretching and massaging right before bed. Also, if I try reading until I fall asleep, then it helps.
