natural sleep

Insomnia has been with us since the dawn of time and, notwithstanding the many advances seen in medicine over the years, there are innumerable people today who swear by tried and tested herbal remedies for insomnia, many discovered hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

But why do so many people swear by herbal remedies for insomnia?

Many people of course simply do not believe in modern medicine and, in particular, are against taking drugs in any shape or form. For others though it is quite simply a matter of preferring to take a natural remedy which has established its effectiveness over the years.

Here's one herb used to produce natural sleep:cure insomnia

California Poppy

The California poppy contains the compound protopine, that is said to be similar in its effect to a light form of morphine.

Different from the Opium poppy, this flower doesn't contain morphine, although it does have a similar structure. Because of this, the California poppy doesn't exhibit any of the addictive properties of its narcotic relative.

As of the time of writing no dosage guidelines have been established as few clinical trials have been conducted into the effects of the California poppy.

Here's a second herb used for curing insomnia:cure insomnia

Valerian Root

Valerian, a hardy perennial flowering plant with sweetly smelling pink or white flowers, grows in many parts of Asia and Europe and also now grows naturally in areas of the US. Other names commonly used for valerian include: garden valerian, and garden heliotrope (no relation to Heliotrope - Heliotropum).

Valerian is also known by various folk names: Bloody Butcher, Fragrant Valerian, St. George's Herb, Phu, Caopn's Trailer, Sets Wale, Cat's Valerian, Vandal Root, Red Valerian, Set Well, All-Heal, English Valerian, and Amantilla.

The main components used for medicinal purposes are the roots, rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (horizontal stems). Normally harvested in September, the dried roots can be used to make teas and tinctures, while the dried plant materials commonly find their way into capsules or tablets.

Reference is made to the use of valerian as a medicinal herb as far back as the time of rome and ancient Greece. Hippocrates wrote of its therapeutic uses and, in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia. The 16th century saw it used to treat trembling, headaches, nervousness, and heart palpitations. In the mid-19th century, many people considered valerian a stimulant that caused some of the same complaints it is thought to treat and held it in low esteem as a medicinal herb. During The Second World War the British used it for the relief of stress during air raids.

Unlike a variety of other natural herbal sleep aids, to gain the benefits of valerian you must use it on a regular basis, with the full effects coming slowly and steadily over time.

Results ought to appear after about a month and regular use promotes deep relaxation and sleep. Some studies suggest valerian as far and away the best natural solution for insomnia and general sleeplessness.

Often prescribed as a calming sleep aid, valerian also plays a useful role in dealing with anxiety-related sleep problems.

Unlike other commonly prescribed sleep medications, valerian is not toxic, doesn't impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery and doesn't raise the effects of alcohol.

Here's a third herb used as a cure for sleeplessness:cure insomnia

Hops

Hops are the fruit of a member of the cannabis family native to Asia, Europe, and North America. Widely grown in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, hops form a fundamental ingredient in the flavoring of beer.

Hops are usually used together with other flowers and herbs. They are often used with lavender, chamomile or valerian, but also holds their own as a natural relaxing sedative. The dried fruits, from which a tea can be made, are often available, as are capsules, tinctures, and tablets.

An extremely effective herbal sachet can be made by incorporating hops as an ingredient.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup hops fruits

1/8 cup chamomile flowers

1/8 cup lavender flowers

Typically, no side effects or adverse drug interactions are encountered when using hops, but some individuals have experienced a rare allergic reaction or contact dermatitis from the pollen crystals in the fruits.
