Insomnia is an extremely common condition that has afflicted the human race since the dawn of history and, in spite of all the advances made in the field of medicine, there are countless people today who swear by the established herbal remedies for insomnia, many of which have been used for hundreds or even thousands of years.

So what is it about herbal remedies for insomnia that makes them so attractive for so many people?

Many people simply do not believe in modern medicine and do not like taking drugs in any form. For other people though it is merely a case of preferring to use a natural remedy which has proven its worth over time.

Chamomile

A common flowering plant, Chamomile (Matricaria camomilla) grows in various parts of central and southern Europe (Slovakia, Italy, Hungary, Germany, and Croatia), as well as in north western Asia. Chamomile is also now widely cultivated in the United States, Australia, North Africa, Argentina, and Egypt.

More commonly packaged as a tea, the dried flowers and dried leaves can be purchased over the counter in both bagged and loose form.

Throughout the ages Chamomile has proved a powerful sleep aid and it can be taken in many ways including being brewed as a tea and used in a sachet placed under your pillow.

Unlike some other sleep remedies, chamomile does not need to be used regularly to enjoy its effects as a treatment for sleeplessness. It can be used just as needed to provide speedy relief for anxiety and sleeplessness.

Chamomile tea, which is made from the leaves and dried flowers of this common plant, frequently proves most effective when sipped a half an hour to forty-five minutes before going to bed.

Chamomile can be particularly valuable in remedying the symptoms of mild, or transient, insomnia.

Chamomile can also act to reduce the histamine-based swelling produced by allergic reactions, and is a very good solution when congested sinuses or food allergies are a contributory factor to sleeplessness.

It should be noted that hay fever sufferers who show an allergic reaction to ragweed and its close botanical relatives (such as chrysanthemum and aster) commonly demonstrate a similar reaction to Chamomile.

Chamomile Tea Recipe (Single serving)

Ingredients:

1 cup water, 1 tsp. dried Chamomile flowers, lemon juice and honey

Preparation:

First, bring the water to the boil in a saucepan. Add the dried chamomile flowers to the water (either directly or using a tea infuser) and boil for thirty to forty-five seconds keeping the lid on the saucepan. Take off the heat and allow the flowers to steep for another minute. The loose flowers should then be removed from the tea using a strainer.

Served with honey and a little lemon juice, this tea is a tasty way to relax after a busy day and its calming properties normally start to take effect within a half hour.

For added sedative effect, a few leaves of Lemon Balm can be used in place of the lemon juice.

Passion Flower

Passion flower is a flowering plant that is native to an area from the Brazil to southeast US and Argentina.

It gets its name because it reminded the early pilgrims of the passion of Christ.

Passion flower is often referred to as Maypops, Maracoc, Passion Vine, Apricot Vine and Granadilla. It has been used historically as a tranquilizer and tobacco substitute (as well as other things).

In addition to having a strong effect on the central nervous system, passion flower also acts as an anti-spasmodic on the smooth muscles of the body, including the entirety of the digestion system, which accounts for its ability to ease and promote digestion.

Some people consider the passion flower to be the herb of choice for treating insomnia as it does not produce any side effects and means a restful, relaxing sleep with no grogginess the following morning.

Furthermore, it is non-addictive and may be used in both the elderley and children without causing complications.

If used for its medicinal purposes, the entire plant can be used. It is commonly collected after some of the berries have matured, then dried whole.

To prepare passion flower tea, pour a cup of boiling water onto a teaspoonful of the dried herb and let it infuse for fifteen minutes. Drink a cup a half hour before you get into bed.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family. It occurs naturally in southern Europe and northern Africa where it grows along roadsides, on disturbed land and in landfills from sea level all the way up into the mountains.

It can be grown in any well-drained soil and is especially tolerant of poor, sandy soils. It can also withstand the full force of the sun.

Lemon Balm demonstrates an effective sedative action and is usually made into a pleasant, lemony-tasting tea.

The tea is made with 2 teaspoons of dried lemon balm in a cup of boiling water. Brew the tea for ten minutes, strain, and drink just prior to going to bed.
