Insomnia has been with us since the dawn of time and, in spite of all the advances made in the field of medicine, there are millions of people today who swear by tried and tested herbal remedies for insomnia, many discovered hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Valerian Root

Valerian, a hardy perennial flowering plant with sweetly smelling white or pink flowers, grows in many parts of Europe and Asia and also now grows naturally in parts of the United States. The principal components used for medicinal purposes are the roots, rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (horizontal stems). Ordinarily harvested in September, the dried roots can be used to prepare teas and tinctures, while the dried plant materials ordinarily find their way into capsules or tablets.

Reference is made to the use of valerian as a medicinal herb as far back as the time of rome and ancient Greece. Hippocrates described its therapeutic uses and, in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia. In the 16th century saw it used to treat nervousness, heart palpitations, headaches, and trembling. In the mid-19th century, many considered valerian a stimulant that caused some of the same complaints it is thought to treat and held it in low esteem as a medicinal herb. During World War II the British used it for the relief of stress during air raids.

Unlike a lot of other natural herbal sleep aids, to gain the benefits of valerian you need to use it regularly, with the full effects building over time.

Results should appear after about a month and regular use promotes deep relaxation and sleep. Several studies suggest valerian as by far the best natural solution for insomnia and general sleeplessness.

While commonly prescribed as a calming sleep aid, valerian can also play a useful role in dealing with anxiety-related sleep problems.

Unlike other commonly prescribed sleep medications, valerian lacks toxicity, does not impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery and does not exaggerate the effects of alcohol.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a common flowering plant that grows in various parts of central and southern Europe (Croatia, Germany, Slovakia, Italy, and Hungary), as well as in north western Asia. Chamomile is also now widely cultivated in the United States, Australia, North Africa, Argentina, and Egypt.

More commonly packaged as a tea, the dried flowers and dried leaves can be purchased over the counter in both bagged and loose form.

For many hundreds of years Chamomile has been a very effective sleep aid and it can be administered in several different ways including as a tea and used in a sachet placed under your pillow.

Unlike some herbal sleep remedies, you do not need to use Chamomile regularly to enjoy its effects as a sleep aid. It can be used when required to give fast relief for both anxiety and sleeplessness.

Chamomile tea, which is made from the dried flowers and leaves of this common plant, typically proves most effective when sipped a half an hour to forty-five minutes before getting into bed.

Chamomile can prove particularly valuable in remedying the symptoms of mild insomnia (often referred to as transient insomnia).

Chamomile can also act to reduce the histamine-based swelling produced by some allergic reactions, and is a very good solution when congested sinuses or food allergies contribute to sleeplessness.

You should note that hay fever sufferers who demonstrate an allergic reaction to ragweed and its close botanical relatives (such as aster and chrysanthemum) usually show a similar reaction to Chamomile.

Chamomile Tea Recipe (Single serving)

Ingredients:

1 cup water, 1 tsp. dried Chamomile flowers, lemon honey and lemon juice

Preparation:

Start by bringing the water to the boil in a saucepan. Add the dried chamomile flowers (either directly or using a tea infuser) and boil for thirty to forty-five seconds with the lid on. Remove from the heat and let the flowers steep for another minute. The loose flowers can then be removed from the tea using a strainer.

Served with honey and a little lemon juice, this tea is a tasty way to relax after a hectic day and its calming properties typically start to take effect within 30 minutes.

For added sedative effect, substitute a few leaves of Lemon Balm for the lemon juice.

Hops

Hops are the fruit of a member of the cannabis family native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Widely grown in the Pacific Northwest of the US, hops appear as a fundamental ingredient in the flavoring of beer.

Hops are normally used together with other herbs and flowers. They are often mixed with valerian, lavender or chamomile, but also holds their own as a relaxing natural sedative. The dried fruits, from which you can make tea, are normally available, as are capsules, tinctures, and tablets.

An effective herbal sachet can be made by adding hops as an ingredient.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup hops fruits

1/8 cup chamomile flowers

1/8 cup lavender flowers

Ordinarily, no side effects or adverse drug interactions are reported from the use of hops, although some individuals have experienced an uncommon allergic reaction or contact dermatitis from the pollen crystals in the fruits.
