natural sleep

A very common condition, insomnia has been with us for many centuries and, despite all the advances we have seen in medicine over the years, there are countless people today who swear by the established herbal remedies for insomnia, many of which have been used for hundreds or even thousands of years.

So why are so many people drawn to herbal remedies for insomnia?

Many people of course simply don't believe in modern medicine and, in particular, do not like taking drugs in any shape or form. For others it is just a matter of preferring to use a natural remedy which has proven its worth time and time again.

Here's one herb used to produce natural sleep:causes insomnia causes

Passion Flower

Passion flower is a flowering plant that is indigenous to an area from the Argentina to southeast US and Brazil.

It gets its name because it reminded the early pilgrims of the suffering (or passion) of Christ.

Passion flower is sometimes referred to as Granadilla, Maypops, Apricot Vine, Maracoc and Passion Vine. It has been used historically as a tranquilizer and tobacco substitute (in addition to other things).

As well as having a profound effect on the central nervous system, passion flower also acts as an anti-spasmodic on the smooth muscles of the body, including the entirety of the digestion system, which accounts for its ability to ease and promote digestion.

Some people consider it to be the herb of choice for treating insomnia as it doesn't produce side effects and creates a relaxing, restful sleep with no grogginess the next morning.

As well, it is non-addictive and may be used in both the elderley and children without creating complications.

When used for its medicinal purposes, the whole plant may be used. It is normally collected after some of the berries have matured, then dried whole.

To brew an effective passion flower tea, pour a cup of boiling water onto a teaspoonful of the dried herb and let it steep for 15 minutes. Drink a cup 30 minutes before going to bed.

Hops

Hops are the fruit of a member of the cannabis family native to Asia, North America, and Europe. Grown widely in the Pacific Northwest of north America, hops form a primary ingredient in adding flavor to beer.

Hops are often used in conjunction with other flowers and herbs. They are commonly paired with lavender, chamomile or valerian, but also holds their own as a natural relaxing sedative. The dried fruits, from which a tea can be made, are typically available, as are tablets, tinctures, and capsules.

An extremely effective herbal sachet can be made by incorporating hops as an ingredient.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup hops fruits

1/8 cup chamomile flowers

1/8 cup lavender flowers

Typically, no side effects or adverse drug interactions from the use of hops are reported, but some people have experienced a rare allergic reaction or contact dermatitis from the pollen crystals in the fruits.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family. It occurs naturally in southern Europe and northern Africa where it grows in landfills, on disturbed land and along roadsides from sea level up into the mountains.

It grows in any well-drained soil and is especially tolerant of poor, sandy soils. It can also withstand the full force of the sun.

Lemon Balm has an effective sedative action and is usually made into a pleasant, lemony-tasting tea.

Try making a tea with 2 teaspoons of dried lemon balm to a cup of boiling water. Brew the tea for ten minutes, strain, and drink immediately prior to getting into bed.
