cause of insomnia
natural sleep
The problem of insomnia has dogged the human race since the dawn of time and, notwithstanding the many advances seen in medicine over the years, there are innumerable people today who swear by the time-honored herbal remedies for insomnia, many discovered hundreds or even thousands of years ago.
But why do so many people swear by herbal remedies for insomnia?
A growing number of people simply do not believe in modern medicine and, in particular, don't like taking modern drugs in any form. For others though it is just a matter of preferring to use a natural remedy which has clearly established its usefullness over time.

| Here's one herb used to produce natural sleep: | cause of insomnia |
California Poppy | The California poppy contains a compound called protopine, that can be thought of as similar in its effect to a lighter version of morphine. Unlike its cousin the Opium poppy, this flower does not contain the narcotic morphine, although it has a similar structure. Because of this, the California poppy does not show any of the addictive properties of its narcotic relative. At this time dosage guidelines have not been established as there have been very few clinical studies of the effects of the California poppy. |

Lemon Balm | Lemon Balm is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family. It occurs naturally in southern Europe and northern Africa where it grows along roadsides, on disturbed land and in landfills from sea level into the mountains. It grows in any well-drained soil and is particularly tolerant of poor, sandy soils. It can also withstand the full force of the sun. Lemon Balm demonstrates an effective sedative action and is typically made into a pleasant, lemony-tasting tea. Try making a tea with 2 teaspoons of dried lemon balm to a cup of boiling water. Brew the tea for ten minutes, strain, and drink right before retiring. |

Chamomile | A common flowering plant, Chamomile (Matricaria camomilla) grows in various parts of central and southern Europe (Hungary, Croatia, Italy, Slovakia, and Germany), as well as in north western Asia. Chamomile is also now widely cultivated in Argentina, Egypt, North Africa, Australia, and the United States. Typically packaged as a tea, the dried leaves and flowers can be bought over the counter in both loose and bagged form. Throughout the ages Chamomile has been a very effective sleep aid and it can be taken in many ways including being brewed as a tea and used in a sachet placed under your pillow. Unlike some other sleep remedies, chamomile does not have to be used on a regular basis to enjoy its effects as a treatment for sleeplessness. It can be used just as needed to supply quick relief for both anxiety and sleeplessness. Chamomile tea, which is brewed from the leaves and dried flowers of this common plant, frequently proves most effective when taken a half an hour to forty-five minutes before getting into bed. Chamomile can be particularly useful in relieving the symptoms of mild insomnia (often referred to as transient insomnia). Chamomile can also reduce the histamine-based swelling produced by allergic reactions, and is a very good solution when food allergies or congested sinuses are a contributory factor to sleeplessness. It should be noted however that hay fever sufferers who demonstrate an allergic reaction to ragweed and its close botanical relatives (such as chrysanthemum and aster) typically show a similar reaction to Chamomile. Here's a recipe for Chamomile tea: Chamomile Tea Recipe (1 serving) Ingredients: 1 cup water, 1 tsp. dried Chamomile flowers, lemon honey and lemon juice Preparation: Start by bringing the water to the boil in a saucepan. Add the dried chamomile flowers (either directly or using a tea infuser) and boil for thirty to forty-five seconds keeping the lid on the saucepan. Take off the heat and allow the flowers to steep for another minute. The loose flowers can then be removed using a strainer. Served with honey and a little lemon juice, this tea is a tasty way to relax after a busy day and its calming properties usually start to take effect within half an hour. For additional sedative effect, substitute a few leaves of Lemon Balm for the lemon juice. |
