I think my dad has narcolepsy. He can be awake one minute, then the next he’s asleep, this happens throughout the day, When he’s waking he has delusions and talks to people who aren’t there. Also recently he has been sleeping sitting up on the couch because he says he can’t sleep in his bed, and it has seemed to be worse since.

I suppose a person going through detox can have the same symptoms. I’ve seen it happen in the hospital where I used to work. If it was just falling asleep at odd times, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Mono, even Depression can cause this. Has your dad been to a doctor?
Your father will have to see his doctor about this. There are other conditions that share the symptoms of narcolepsy – seizure sleep apnea and insomnia, to name three – but if he meets with his doctor, he can have blood tests to rule out medical conditions associated with his symptoms and possibly be tested for the narcolepsy-related gene. Other diagnostic tests might include an EEG and ECG. The most significant study would be a polysomnography, often referred to as a sleep study, especially if it includes Multiple Sleep Latency testing (MSLT).
I strongly suggest that he be seen by his physician soon.
