Well I don't suffer from jet lag much even when I don't sleep at all on the plane I just don't get it much.
What I do is, set my watch to local time of my destination the second I get on the plane. Than i try to just do stuff I would do at that time.
What I would say is the best way to prevent it is on a flight going west to east red eye just don't sleep much the night before wake up early so right after you eat dinner on the plane you are tired and ready to go to sleep. And for flights East to west just don't go to sleep until its a normal time to g to sleep where you are. Just eat and sleep to the schedule of where you are, that's all I do. But this is coming from a person who has stayed up 38 hours with no sleep and not feel tired until 11pm the next night when I got into bed.
Just do whatever you have to do in the time zone you are in.

Set your watch to the local destination time the moment you get into the aircraft. And yea, do like the locals do... I find try sleeping and wake up at their time the very next day helps a lot.

By far the best way is to force your body to adapt immediately to the local time zone. So, if you land in Australia at 9am but back where you came from it's the middle of the night, eat lunch when the locals do ... stay awake .. eat dinner at local dinner time ... then go to sleep as late as you can. I've always found that if I could manage that (and sometimes it is very hard!) I wake up the next day feeling pretty much normal and acclimatised.
