try not to sleep on the flight… it will make it alot easier to get use to when you reach the USA.
A few days before the trip, start getting yourself used to what time it will be there.
For example, if you’re in London, England you would be at GMT -0. California is GMT- 08, meaning they are 8 hours behind your current time. So at 0800 in the morning, you should be dead asleep, or just getting there, as it is midnight in CA.
People usually wake around 8:30 or so when not working, so figure on waking up around 4:30 PM during the last few days before you leave the UK.
That will get you started on adjusting to the time. As for the other weirdness in Crazyfornia, you’re on your own!
When traveling over several time zones for just a couple of days it can be difficult to combat jet lag. But, I have found several strategies that help me:
1. Make sure that you are getting good sleep the week leading up to your trip. If you are ill-rested before flying, chances are you will not adjust as well to travel.
2. If your plan lands in California in the morning, make sure you sleep on the plane! Bring ear plugs, sleeping mask, sleeping pills, anything that will help you sleep…that way when you land your body will feel like it really is morning. If your plane lands in the evening, I recommend that you try not to sleep on your flight. Bring fun stuff to do and drink some caffeine. Take a nap sometime before your flight so that you aren’t as tired. That way, when you land you can go right to sleep and be on schedule.
3. Take echinacea or Airborne before your flight. Being off on sleep and on a stale enclosed airplane can make it easier to catch a cold…combat it as best you can so that your several days in CA are spent healthy. Also, drink a lot of water!
These three tips will give you an edge. Since you are preparing ahead of time, you will be fine. Good luck to you and happy travels!
