I fly back and forth to China about 12 times each year and I can answer your question with reasonable certainty. These are the best methods for overcoming jet lag.

1. Purchase Melotonin, take one pill 30 mins before bed time on the evening you arrive.

2. The day before your departure, synch one watch to China time. Nap during the day for a good duration, stay awake, work and or finish packing during the night.

3. Operate as if you were already in China.. Once you arive in China, you will be excited, but go to bed during normal hours according to China time even if you are not tired..

Follow this and you will largely alleviate any signed of jet lag..
Sleep on the plane when you need to and again, in synch with China time..

Sleep is the best thing. I imagine you will be about 18 -20 hrs or more on this trip. Since it is 12 hrs difference here your days and nights are switched. However if you can sleep, you will be better prepared to overcome the lag period. I have made several trips from philadelphia. The best I have doe to avoid this lag is fly to LAX spend the night in Los Angeles then fly to China non stop from lax. I was also cheaper. If you have multi stop itineraries like i d the last time it is more difficult. Via NWA i flew from Philadelphia to Detroit to Tokyio then Guangzhou. This was the most difficult flight. about 23 hrs total.

Hi, I've traveled from the US to China and back several times, and it really is hard not to have fet lag. The best way for me has been to stay awake on the plane even if you feel the urge to sleep. That way, when you arrive in China at night, you would be so tired that you immediately fall asleep. And every day, just do things that would tire you out so you'll immediately fall asleep at night.

it's not going to china that the jetlag comes into play, it's when you return. when you leave the u.s. for the trip, you gain 12 hours and get a little sleep and you're good to go when you arrive. but on the way back, you can leave at 9am and you'll be home by 3pm the same day. even though the flying time was over 24 hours. i always plan to get home on a thursday so that i have a few days to rest up and get my internal clock back to normal. if your aunt and uncle are going to guangzhou to adopt that baby, they will be pleasantly surprised at the accomodations of the white swan hotel that they will stay at. and don't forget to have them bring you some trinkets home. the area immediately around the white swan has nice restaurants and there will be many english speaking chinese. just don't forget to bargain for the prices of these trinkets, they expect it. good luck
