Most importantly HOW in the world DO YOU deal with such a stressful career? Don’t you find it extremely stressful on multi-levels?
What are all the reasons you love about being in the sky/having a career as a pilot?
Well, I have to admit, I always see pilots w/a big grin on their lovely faces
So in other words, it’s probably not “too” stressful, unless you witness a giant UFO or something that’s armed. 00ps! didn’t mean to scare ya

Drink lots of water. It is not that stressful compared to ATC
couple beers at happy hour, pinch a couple stewardesses , and all is good
Sleep while the plane is in auto pilot.
Have a good flight
Being away from family and friends for long periods of time is tough but I love flying that is why I do it. I like the stressful, multi-task job as it makes things interesting. No one flight is ever the samel. As for “Jet Lag” we are given mandatory rest periods and are limited to the amount of hours we can fly per week, month & year so after awhile you adjust to the lifestyle.
In answer to your first question. Sleep. Lot’s of sleep whenever we can get it. I quit trying to fight jet lag years ago. We fly from California to Brisbane, Australia about once a month. The boss likes to arrive at about nine on Monday morning so we takeoff about seven Saturday night to compensate for crossing the date line. He has a bedroom on the airplane and wants to fly straight through so we take along relief crew members. Trouble is, when we’re wheels up at seven at night, by the time all the crew’s had dinner out over the pacific, everybody is ready for bed at the same time. We all try to sleep as much as we can but it’s tough. What we end up with is twice as many really tired people when we land. But that’s the job.
As far as the stress, believe it or not, it is much less stressful than many jobs where you sit at a desk all day and have somebody hammering on you about deadlines and politicking around the office. Ours is a highly technical job with specific tasks that must be managed but are easily measurable. We don’t have to wonder if our supervisor is going to approve of our work. He wanted to go to Brisbane, we took him to Brisbane. End of story. Had we landed in Melbourne by mistake I suppose things would get stressful from him but knock on wood, haven’t screwed up that bad yet.
As for the reasons I love my career as a pilot? I think they have a limit to how many times you can tap the keys here and to answer that completely would take the better part of a day. But it does have it’s ups and downs. hahahahahaha
The best thing that you can do for jet lag is to get as much sleep as you can. Much of the problems stemming from disruption of your circadian rhythm is due to sleep deprivation.
It can be high stress but it is fun.
I have always been fascinated with airplanes and I love to travel. I have lost count after 30 countries and plan to see many more still:)
That’s what the thrust reversers are for, eliminates the effects of jet lag………
Operate on one time zone regardless of where you are in the world, whenever possible… I am based in MSP and stay in the central time zone, in my head anyway, whenever I can… I often will fly out of DTW… or RON in a city in the eastern time zone… When I’m over there, I like to just think of it as being an hour earlier than it really is, that way when I get back to the central time zone, I dont have to adjust again… Basically, sleep whenever possible helps deal with the mental stress of the job…
