Any personal experiences on the best way to beat jet lag?

Monsieur Kermit asked:
I’ll be arriving in Paris around 8:30 am, which I think will be about 1am in Minneapolis (where i’m from). I would assume getting to my hotel will be an adventure and I’ll get there around 10:30ish? Maybe. I’m probably better off ******* it up and trying to stay active until around 7 or 8pm Paris time, then crash?

Am I wrong on this assumption? I really have a strong lack of faith in my ability to sleep on a plane. I’ll give it the old college try, but I doubt it.

Get some sleep. Plain and simple.
Sunglasses, coffee and masterbation. Works everytime.
i definately recommend trying to suck it up and stay awake for a while. i travelled to germany and was struggling to stay awake all day but slept like a baby that night. In the meantime everyone else slept upon our arrival, but the next day i was fully energized while everyone else was lagging for the next 2 days. GOOD LUCK and have a SAFE trip.
My grandparents swear by melatonin supplements. They will regulate your internal clock.
I usually sleep on transatlantic flights to be awake by the time I arrive to my destination, but if you can’t do that, can you try to take a nap before your flight so that you’ll be somewhat rested/relaxed.
Try to stay awake as long as you can, and possibly take an afternoon nap after lunch?
Have a good trip.
I was in the same situation before. Go to sleep as soon as you get on the plane! This will convince your body that you are already on paris time. If you can, try living on Paris time in advance. Add 9 hrs to your time at home and follow that schedule…if you have some time to do so before you leave….but definetely sleep on the plane.
There are 2 ways to lessen the afect of jetlag. there is no way to fully beat it.
1. A week or so before your trip, change your sleeping hours to match the time you will be awake in Paris. So if you planned to wake up at 8AM in Paris, wake up at 12.30am in the morning at home (worked that off the time zones you gave me) and go back to bed 15 hours later (3pm) and keep that cycle for the week leading up to the trip so when you get there, you will be awake at the correct times of the day immediatly.
But if that does not suit you because you have to work ect the week before you have to fly out…this is what may dad did when he went to Las Vegas from here in Australia.
Soon as he got off the plane in LV, he landed at 5pm or something. He went to bed at 9pm, set the alarm for 7am and just got up. He says after 5 days, he was getting more used to it.
They are my 2 ways for looking at it…combating it beofre you go there or combating it immediatly after you arive there!
You can eat a high carbohydrate meal on the plane, and that will help you get sleepy.
But if you want to stay awake, and that is usually the easiest way to reset, follow these rules:
1) Eat a high protein meal, that will keep you alert.
2) Drink a lot of fluids to stay hydrated.
3) Get a lot of sunshine, so that it resets your clock.
4) At bedtime (about nine) take 8 mg of melatonin about a half an hour before you go to bed. It helps reset your clock, helps you get a deeper sleep, and you can use it for up to 4 days until you are totally reset.
Have fun!
I’m a flight attendant so I always adjust to the time zone i’m in. Taking a nap during the day has always left me feeling tired and moody after, but a 20-30 minute nap max works well to refuel you. I suggest not looking at the time it is at home, switch your watch over as soon as you can. Take a nap at home before you leave for your flight, try to take some sleeping pills, curved neck pillow, earplugs and/or ipod so you can relax and avoid the plane noise, choose a seat closer to the window or middle, away from the isle so people don’t disturb you, bring warm clothes as planes can get chilly and then it’s harder to sleep, give the sleeping on a plane a try, not only will it help but it will also make the time go by faster, try and go on the paris time zone when you get there, and try to go to bed around 7 or 8 pm like u said.
You are right. Suck it up and try to get on Paris time as fast as you can. After you get checked into your hotel, have lunch and keep active. Staying in the sun is good. It lets your brain know that you should be awake. Sure, you will end up in bed by 7 but you will be glad you did it this way.
