I have been taking Prozac 10 mg for 6 days now. It is like I am on speed. I have intense amounts of energy, but I also feel nervous and restless. I am on this medication for the treatment of anxiety, so it makes no sense that it would make me even more nervous than I already am. PLUS, I am having severe insomnia with this drug. What is going on here?

Actually many medicines cause wakefulness and alertness. Taking Prozac close to bedtime could certainly cause this problem as it’s a listed side effect of this drug. Talk this over with your doctor. I would take it much earlier in the day and give it a few days more for your body to adjust to this drug. Also stay away from cold medicines, caffeine and alcohol which help you to stay awake too.
I have a friend that takes Prozac in accordance to Schizophrenia, And i remember him telling me his psychiatrist had to put him on a sleeping pill because a side effect of Prozac is Insomnia, Get onto your doctor about it.
Medication effects everyone differently, i have been on prozac for several years, and i have no problem with it, however this may not be the case for you.
As you have only been on it for such a short time id give it a bit more time for your body to get used to it, otherwise if its really bothering you go see your doctor, anti depressants often work wonders for one person, but make another worst, its trial and error, you may need something different.
Good luck x
did your DR/GP recommend you taking this at nocte?? go and see ur GP and ask, have you read up on it on sight….i would if i was you!
Stem cell nutrition could help what ails you.
You are having an adverse reaction.
Prozac is known to be very stimulating drug, with a stimulant side-effect profile. Hypomania, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, restlessness therefore make up an adverse reaction profile which should not be considered unusual.
You may, or may not, find these symptoms remit with time.
However, in a way, the time situation is irrelevant. There is a Black Box warning on the drug relating to side-effects such as these. There is patient literature relating to this which you were hopefully told about and given to read. This literature will have asked you, AND those about you, to monitor yourself for certain reactions to the drug, most particularly during the starting of the drug and at any change in dose.
If you are in the USA and haven’t a copy of the medication guide, then the relevant documents can be obtained either through the FDA site or attached to the Prozac information sheet (links below).
The warnings are all similar: “Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.” ; “All patients being treated with antidepressants for any indication should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, and unusual changes in behavior, especially during the initial few months of a course of drug therapy, or at times of dose changes, either increases or decreases. The following symptoms, anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia (psychomotor restlessness), hypomania, and mania, have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with antidepressants for major depressive disorder as well as for other indications, both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric.”; “Families and caregivers of patients being treated with antidepressants for major depressive disorder or other indications, both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric, should be alerted about the need to monitor patients for the emergence of agitation, irritability, unusual changes in behavior, and the other symptoms described above, as well as the emergence of suicidality, and to report such symptoms immediately to health care providers. Such monitoring should include daily observation by families and caregivers. ”
Akathisia is one of the main concerns behind the warnings (the wiki has a definition) – and your symptoms of agitation, motor restlessness, possible hypomania, and insomnia do sound relevant.
The warning literature is not there to alarm you, it is presented for your benefit & your protection – the advice is to call your doctor.
