Is insomnia common in the 1st trimester of pregnancy?

I haven’t been able to get adequate sleep for two weeks now and I’m 9 weeks pregnant. Is there any positive relationship between insomnia and early pregnancy? I have no nausea or vomiting, no urinary frequency so far. I am very tired during days but wide awake during nights. All non-medication methods of dealing with the sleep problem that I tried have been unsuccessful so far.

Yes, it is very common to have problems sleeping early on and late in pregnancy. This should get better around your 12th week or so, and then will get worse again (or did for me) around 22weeks. Try and take naps here and there, they are what saved me in the beginning. Good Luck.
Ive been having trouble sleeping for some time. Im 13+ wks I do have nausea at night. With my past pregnancys I also had trouble sleeping on and of but this one is worse!!! Nothing that my midwife suggested helped either. Last time around when I was almost due they gave me sleeping tablets because I was so exhusted and the risks at that stage for the baby were worse if I continued not to sleep. I found I was best to get up and watch tv or read if it was real bad trying to staying bed made me more up tight and sleep harder come. At the moment I wake around 1am its driving me crazy!!!
I don’t know if it’s common (most women complain of being too tired in the first trimester), but it does happen. I sometimes experienced what you described, being exhausted during the day but not being able to fall asleep at night, but not so often that it was a problem. There might be some medications you can take with your doctor’s approval if it’s really bad. I know Benedryl is OK to take during pregnancy and that stuff will knock you out cold, but talk to your doctor first.
For me that happened quite a bit. I wish I had some advice to make sleep your friend, but I don’t. What I started to do was take a nice, long, warm shower before bed to aid in the sleep process. I’m 14 weeks now and I still have problems from time to time. Let me know if you find a solution to this problem. I hope this helped…
